(just giving some info, i will probably not be around when you get to playing
with this, so i give it now, even if you will probably use it later).

This is the standard way of packaging the debian dir only, and having to
unpack the upstream source into it afterward, i do so for parted, as well as
various ocaml projects, altough i find it useful to have the upstream tarball
included as well (as binary compressed file).

Anyway, i think this is well suited for you to use, but less so if Erik wants
to use the repo for upstream work too, so you two have to discuss what you
want to obtain exactly.
