I believe mkinitrd (or yaird) is still needed for kernels below 2.6.12.
I also don't think the functionality of the e2fsprogs mkinitrd script
is implemented in initramfs-tools (or yaird). So if avoiding the script
is ok then just setting PKGSCRIPTS=no in /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf is
also an option.
