Several years ago I did some benchmarking to decide whether it was
worthwhile to ship Merced vs. McKinley optimized kernels as well as UP
vs. SMP kernels.  The conclusion at the time was that the performance
degradations of running a McKinley SMP kernel on a UP Merced machine
were negligible.  This was with 2.4 but I doubt it has changed much.
