Not rubbish actually, but extremely accurate. Watch out with statements 
like that when you ask for help...

Sata support in 2.6.8 kernel is limited. You may want to try the daily 
builds of the installer using 2.6.12 from:
http://www.debian.org/releases/sarge/debian-installer/

With proper Sata drivers the HD should be recognized as /dev/sda (scsi) 
instead of ide.

Use newer version of the kernel. 2.6.8 is unlikely to be fixed.
