You need to look at linux-2.6 source package. I am not familiar with 
synaptic, but the relevant control information is available in the .dsc 
file, for example at

http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.12-2.dsc

The Build-Depends line there is:

Build-Depends: gcc (>= 4:4.0) [!sparc !alpha !m68k], gcc-3.3 [sparc alpha m68k], ...
