no you are right it's not yet in experimental..

the debian reference has some bits,
beware when working of from the debian configs
that the upstream ide is not modularized.
oldconfig is also very handy.
cp /boot/config-2.6.foo .config
make oldconfig (lots of enter)

when throwing the --initrd to make-kpkg forget about that
message that you need a patch, on any recent 2.4 or 2.6
you won't need one.
