Look in the first line of /var/log/dmesg and you will find something
like:

           ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If this show you "dummy VGA 80x25" then there is soething wrong.

It is used by the framebuffer but if you screen stays empty,
the kernem has not found the frambuffer module.
