Thanks to everyone involved for taking this seriously, looking into it
and offering a fix.  As far as I can tell, it did not affect my build
process, but served as an inconvenience (amplified on slower systems) by
requiring an "\rm -rf kernel-source-2.6.9; tar xjf
kernel-source-2.6.9.tar.bz2;" instead of a "make mrproper;" to get a
clean build.
