Bug#271038: Feedback

Hi,

I have the same problem on an old K6 box. It has a SIS5513 IDE
controller. It boots, and when it tries to mount the root filesystem
the VFS layer says it can't find an ext3 filesytem on the root device.
I have verified, using DELAY and BUSYBOX, that the IDE controller
modules are loaded, as well as the ext3 module. I have this problem
with both 2.6.7 and 2.6.8 which are the only 2.6 kernels available for
testing/unstable now. The 2.4 kernel works are expected but the initrd
was generated on September 9th (with a diffeent version of
 initrd-tools?)

After failing to mount the root device because the filesystem can't be
recognized everything afterwards goes south. Since init can't open
/dev/console (because it's not there beucase / wasn't mounted) it quits
 and the kernel panics.

Any pointers as how to proceed in order to give you guys the
information you need to fix the bug would be most welcomed.

 Marcelo
