After booting, there is no /proc/acpi.
"ACPI: Interpreter disabled" appears at boot. Adding the
"acpi=force" kernel option makes the kernel hang after:
"ACPI: IRQ10 SCI: Edge set to Level Trigger"
Workaround: recompile the kernel and unset CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC
(Still has to use acpi=force and noapm in this case)
More info: This is a Compaq Presario 701EA laptop with VIA chipset.
Seen the same problem on 2.4.22 and 2.4.26 also.
