Bug#257129: kernel-image-2.4.26: Does not mount filesystems specified by label

I am using grub, not lilo.
And I have just comlied a vanilla 2.4.26 kernel which works for me.
I do not use an initrd, though.

So from my point of view my setup is correct (verified with various
kernels booting properly), and either the debian kernel or some initrd
script breaks the system during boot process if a 2.4 debian kernel is
used.

I would like to help diagnosing the problem if I can so that I and other
people can use Debian kernels.
But the only respose I received so far is that I have set up my sytem
incorrectly and should seek help on debian-user ML.

Of course, I can use kernels compiled from vanilla sources which means
just a little inconvenience.
