Thanks for the fast response. I can confirm that this indeed fixed my 
problem.

That would be great if you documented this problem.

It would also be helpful if the kernel options were documented somewhere 
in /usr/share/doc/kernel-image-2.6.7-1-k7.

As well as some documentation of a correct procedure to handle problems 
with the kernel. Or perhaps a pointer to were such documentation can be 
found.
