Bug#259370: kernel-image-2.6.7-powerpc: install messages /transition from 2.4.25 complicated
Package: kernel-image-2.6.7-powerpc
Version: 2.6.7-3
Severity: minor
Apple Powerbook G3 400 Mhz "Lombard"
When trying to update to a new kernel coming from 2.4.25
or earlier, this is a bit confusion to the non-kernel-expert.
There are two messages when installing the deb,
(the following log is from 2.6.6, but it is the same with 2.6.7-3.)
| Unpacking kernel-image-2.6.6-powerpc (from .../kernel-image-2.6.6-powerpc_2.6.6-5_powerpc.deb) ...
|
| You are attempting to install an initrd kernel image (version 2.6.6-powerpc)
| This will not work unless you have configured your boot loader to use
| initrd. (An initrd image is a kernel image that expects to use an INITial
| Ram Disk to mount a minimal root file system into RAM and use that for
| booting).
|
|
| I repeat, You need to configure your boot loader -- please read your
| bootloader documentation for details on how to add initrd images.
Okay I could configure yaboot to do so.
I guess it would be helpful to briefly say why using initrd is an
advantage and I want to use it.
| If you have already done so, and you wish to get rid of this message,
| please put
| `do_initrd = Yes'
| in /etc/kernel-img.conf. Note that this is optional, but if you do not,
| you'll continue to see this message whenever you install a kernel
| image using initrd.
| Do you want to stop now? [Y/n]n
| Setting up kernel-image-2.6.6-powerpc (2.6.6-5) ...
| cpio: /etc/modprobe.conf: No such file or directory
| cpio: /lib/modules/modprobe.conf: No such file or directory
Those two cpio look strange to me.
I cannot say if it is a but or not, but I cannot see a reason
that a package should have thos errors.
Hopefully mentioning those small thinks is also helping
to improve this for others,
Bernhard
