Does your lp device have the correct ownership and permissions?
$ ls -l /dev/lp*
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 0 2006-09-06 13:41 /dev/lp0
Maybe some other process is blocking the device.
$ lsof -w | grep /dev/lp
might help you to find out if that is the case.
