Checked it out:
KPDF: no error message, messes with fonts and layout _a_lot_
xpdf: installed it, really good display, but seem unable to print from it (yet; trying to configure ...)
lp -d: now no longer an alternative, because the thing it printed wasn't so good after all, now that I've seen xpdf's rendering

... so KPDF is buggy as well and only xpdf does it? That would be a sad testimony to Linux' business capabilities. No, I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks for the help so far, Hendrik!
