My fonts look terrible

In kde I'm using FreeSerif 12. I'm displaying it on a 21 inch trinitron through an NVida Geforce 4 (which Debian recognizes only as generic SVGA). The fonts look awful. It's most noticeable when typing an equals sign in the terminal window, where the lower bar is twice the thickness of the upper, and wide letters are overwritten by the next one (for example, mn looks like nn and wx looks like vx).

Any ideas?
