The most recent upgrade also turned anti-aliasing off for the
greeter.  Perhaps that has something to do with the ugliness.

Alternate theory: I had turned anti-aliasing on manually; the defaults
haven't changed.  The file is /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc.
