I just spent a few hours trying to help resolve this on a friend's machine
on the other side of the planet. Seems it's a bug in libfreetype6
(#216605) which is fixed in 2.1.5-3, shortly to appear on the mirrors.
In the meantime it seems removing gsfonts-other can fix the problem (it
did for us).
