paul@dove:~$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility
P/M AGP 2x (rev 64)

I have had X 4.1. and X 4.2 working fine on this machine since it was
installed as a Woody box a while ago (now running sid). KDE 2.2, 3.1
and 3.1.1 official debs, with no problems of the sort you describe.

I have attached my XF86Config-4 file for your reference (the first 24
lines can be ignored - they are to override debconf/dexconf as I use a
non-standard screensize).

The (probable) interesting part is:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x
[Mobility LM]"
        Driver "ati"
        Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

But this is fairly basic/standard.

Are you using debconf to configure X, or...?
