The problem was with libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 1:2.95.4-14 which had a broken
symlink.

No, a complete reinstall is rarely neccessary. You have been brainwashed by
too many years of M$. Try and unlearn this habit.

An easy solution would have been to downgrade to the previous version (rev
-12):
#dpkg -i libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2_1:2.95.4-12_i386.deb
Of course it helps if you still have the previous version handy - check out
package apt-move. apt-listchanges is another handy package to have installed.
