Have a look at ~/.xsession-errors.  Looks like your problem is some-
where else.  What processes are running when you type 'ps x' in the
konsole that sits in the middle of the grey desktop?

FWIW for now you can try
		kdeinit_wrapper kdesktop

to get a blue background :)
