Daniele,
~    Personally, I am building Eclipse from source right now and using
that.  You can use java-package to get a JDK set up properly and then
ensure that you have Ant set up and it should build alright.  My plugins
are working quite well with the 3.1 stream, including XMLBuddy,
myEclipseIDE, and the Web Tools Project.  If you are on a platform other
than x86, the build of Eclipse from source can be a bit buggy.  I use
PowerPC and it has gotten much better, but 3.01 was a joke.
