You do not need to do an NMU. The java-common package is maintained by the
debian-java@lists.debian.org mailinglist so you can add yourself to the
Uploaders field and do proper changes. There should be some consensus about
it though. If you do that, you can probably remove me (If I'm still listed
as a co-maintainer).
