What is the Debian branch on your system? stable, testing, unstable?
Your problem maybe a different compiler between Mozilla (I suppose you
are using Mozilla?) and the JRE.

I also had problems with applet on Mozilla and Blackdown1.4 on i386.

Don't know. But you have to know that there is no free-jre providing
java plugin for a web browser at the moment.

Maybe some one else will have better news...
