I thought there were some Java systems which could go in Debian now.
Is that correct? If so, why aren't those things you named in main? I
have heard that the contrib Tomcat is a particular irritation to some
users.

I haven't checked the exact current situation but based on the
debian-java posts the situation is such that Ant is almost ready to go
into main. After Ant the next candidates are parts of Eclipse and
Tomcat. I don't know the status of Jetty. At the moment trying to get
Tomcat or Jetty to run on say Kaffe is a non-trivial task (read: I
spent a few hours last weekend trying with no success on Tomcat) but -
from what I've heard - possible.

Hm, maybe I should document that a little better. See here for a short 'work for me' mail from me:

http://www.kaffe.org/pipermail/kaffe/2003-December/044602.html

You'll also need to copy struts_legacy.jar from struts into tomcat.

Ant works fine for me, too, when I set JAVA_HOME to where kaffe is installed, and set -Dbuild.compiler=kjc when I invoke ant as in.

ant -Dbuild.compiler=kjc

Jetty works, too, afaik.

Tomcat 5 still doesn't work since our Jar loader doesn't adapt the Classpath according to the Classpath information in Jar files. It's on my list of things to fix, but it'd be faster if someone provided a patch ;)

I don't know how well that works with the current version in debian, though. It's about 4 months behind the current release of kaffe and things tend to develop quite quickly here ;)

In any case, there is the kaffe mailing list kaffe@kaffe.org, and the IRC channel #kaffe on irc.freenode.org if you want to get in touch with kaffe developers directly.

cheers,
