Care to point out what version of libpango you have installed? I am running
1.0.3-2 but tried the one from testing and that did not work.

that is not what this means at all.  What this means that the symbol
FT_Stream_GetShort was not found in libpangoxft which implies they are not
compiling against the latest pango.
