I don't know what the status of the Debian/IBM relationship is
but IBM has an open news server at news.software.ibm.com where
you can read/post. I wonder if they are aware there is a
problem?

There are several messages from Debian JDK users. In response to
a bug report from a Debian user in the ibm.software.java.linux
newsgroup, a tech thanked the submitter and said they would check
it out on RedHat -- they don't test on Debian. But he said it
nicely :-)
