problema HD?

Mi scuso se l'argomento non è strettamente consono alla mailing list.
Negli ultimi giorni, se tengo il pc acceso tutto il pomeriggio, alla 
sera tardi a volte va in tilt: l'interfaccia grafica non risponde più e 
se vado ad una shell (ctrl f6) continuano ad uscirmi una serie di 
messaggi del tipo:

Spegnendo il pc e facendolo ripartire devo fargli fare un fsck della 
partizione su cui è installato il sistema operativo.
La ricerca in google ha confermato i miei sospetti di problemi all'hard 
disk. Alcuni dicono che potrebbe essere il cavo SATA, altri qualche 
contatto.
Quali test posso fare (ho solo debbian) per controllare l'integrità 
hardware?

Devo iniziare a pensare all'acquisto di un nuovo PC?
Dato che uso solo linux, posso orientarmi su una macchina a 64 bit 
oppure è meglio rimanere ai 32?
Sono ben accetti qualsiasi consiglio per acquisti.
