Installazione driver NVIDIA

Salve a tutti,
il quesito di oggi è: perché a me non vanno i driver NVIDIA???

Kernel linux 2.6.22-3-686
scheda grafica GeForce 7300 GS
driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1

la procedura d'installazione va a buon fine ma non riesce ad avviare gdm.
Sono andato allora nel xorg.conf creato dall'installer di NVIDIA ma non 
ci capisco molto. Empiricamente provo a commentare alcune sezioni che 
nel vecchio xorg.conf non c'erano ma niente.
Riesco ad avviare il server grafico se commento le prime tre sezioni e 
metto come driver "nv" al posto di "nvidia". Ma ovviamente cosi non sto 
utlizzando i driver voluti...
