kernel headers... a che sevono?

Come noterete, la domanda e' da ignorantone ma....
non ho mai detto di nono esserlo :-)

Ricompilando le glibc, mi ha sono imbattuto nella richesta
dei kernel headers e della impostazione di una variabile d'ambiente.

fatte le due cose, le glibc si sono compilate tranquillamente.

Ora, la curiosita' e' rimasta: a che servono i kernel headers?
c'e' qualche documento/link che spiega la loro funzione? grassie,
