Ma synaptic non era un semplice front-end ad APT?

Salve
uso debian (testing,Knoppix su harddisk), non ho un vero problema ma
piu' che altro una curiosita'.
Pensavo che synaptic fosse un semplice front-end che usasse l'engine
di apt per la gestione e la risoluzione delle dipendenze.
Oggi volevo provare a metter su Gnome, metto le fonti per testing nel
sources.list, e lancio l'update
Pensavo che il meta pacchetto per gnome fosse gnome (poi ho trovato
che e' gnome-desktop-environment), se provo da synaptic ad installare
gnome, mi segnala che deve rimuovere mi sembra ghex (perche'?)
aggiornare un po' di roba e installare un po' di pacchetti.
Se provo lo stesso con apt-get ottengo
