I have tried this, but "minicom" refuse to connect and stay Off-Line

Be sure you use the same serial line parameters, usually it's 115200 8N1, or 9600 8N1.
Then, check the path of the device, which default is /dev/ttyS0 on Linux.

I know. Took me last year 10secs to figure out because I am not alone.

Google:  "How to recover the password on a 3Com 4924"

While the "3Com Update Utility" can connect to the Switch I am puzzeling
arround, why I can not connect with "minicom".  Have  not  used  minicom
for the last 3 or 4 years and can not more remembe how I have done this.

Check there :

The most important thing is to start minicom with -s parameter to have the config menu.

Igor.
