Re: veryPC, Seagate, raid - caught in the middle

Hi Mimo,

I have had similar issues to this. it happened some time back, however, i had a raid 0 setup, of which data became
inconsistent very often...and i got endless array failures.

Naturally, i replaced the drives, after which the same issue happened some weeks later. it took me a while to figure out my problem, which in the end was a faulty SATA Raid backplane. Once i had changed that, everything ran fine.

Depending on what type of machine you are using, id recommend trying another backplane, or replacing the SATA cables. If this machine is fairly old, i'd also recommend removing the backplane and spraying the internal and external connectors with compressed air to remove any dust that sometimes settles there. Also, make sure that your servers are well ventilated, and that the drives are not overheating. If all else if fine, then i'd agree that
your motherboard might be faulty.

In my case of the 'faulty' drives, i was advised by our hardware supplier to run a diagnostic on the drives, using Seagate Seatools before sending them back for warranty replacement. Ironically, Seatools had passed all the drives on the extended tests, and to verify, the drives did actually run fine in another machine.

LVM is an excellent idea for production servers, as when and if your drives begin to fail, and you need to replace them with bigger drives, you can grow the LVM partitions on the raid arrays to the size of the bigger drives fairly easily.

regards

kalpesh.

I have a veryPC 1U server with 2 nodes which both had been running fine until I upgraded one node (it's 2 independent systems sharing one power supply) and replaced the two 250GB WD hard disks with 4x500GB Seagate Momentus 7200RPM ones.
I set up the 4 hds as linux software raid1 like this:
md0 : active raid1 sda1[0] sdb1[1]
       979840 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md1 : active raid1 sda2[0] sdb2[1]
       9767424 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md2 : active raid1 sda3[2] sdb3[1]
       292969280 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md3 : active raid1 sda4[0] sdb4[1]
       184667072 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md4 : active raid1 sdd1[0] sdc1[1]
       488383936 blocks [2/2] [UU]

After a couple of days of heavy load one of the drives (sdd) stopped responding (exact error further down). I spoke to manufacturer and they said it's possible there's a problem with Seagate laptop drives and raid because Seagate are trying to force customers to buy their server class laptop drives. They also recommended switching the two drives around. So I tried that but same problem again (on the same physical drive - now sdc). Raid degraded, one disk not responding. So I replaced the failed disk with a new one. Everything was fine for a while (almost a month).
But today I take a look and notice that a different md is degraded - md2. According to the log .

Previously, I remember (sadly don't have logs from June anymore) it was trying with 1.5 Gbps and then gave up. But funny thing is that the other md devices on the same disk are still there.

General question, should I change my partitioning to just have one partition per drive and do the rest with lvm?

But more importantly, has anyone seen anything similar before? I suspect the controller/motherboard by now as I've tested the drive that had failed in the machine quite heavily but it still hasn't failed.

Any comments welcome. Some more details of the system:

Thanks,

mimo
