I would say - Yes MDRAID is reliable but (funny) only on debian.

I had OOPSes/lockups on gentoo (patched kernel as well ass vanilla
kernels), on routers (trustix ) and nearly always when we came to use
vanilla kernel on any distribution but debian ;)
