I have used both qmail and postfix on my servers before. Qmail is great
if you like tiny and secure. But if you need very many features added
in, it can turn into a mess real quick trying to merge patches, etc. I
have found Postfix to be very flexible and feature rich, yet the extra
features stay turned off until you enable them.

If you want a setup similar to vpopmail, and you don't mind using
MySQL, take a look at the following tutorial. I found it to be very
helpful in setting up a postfix installation.
