Comparing Java Web Server performance

Dear List,
I am currently in the process of upgrading our server farm - again,
and am looking at new hardware...
One problem that I am having though is trying to find a good way to
compare 2 proc Opteron machines
vs 2 proc Xeons with Hyperthreading....
We are running tomcat with the Sun JVM on our web servers.
I can get our load balancer to send both servers the same number of
users, but
I still don't know how to compare which one can handle more....
Do I use idle time? Idle is based on 4 procs for a HT Dual Xeon,
compared to 2 procs on an Opteron...
The machines I am looking at at the moment are
SuperMicro 6014P-82R - with Dual Xeon 3.4
Sun X2100 - Opteron 175
Sun X4100 - Dual Opteron 252
Has anyone tried a kernel.org kernel on the Suns?
