I would agree with what Christoph says, and would also point out that the Linux md drives use Linux native filesystems. In other words, if you have a server with a RAID-1 (mirror) pair of disks, you can take one disk out of that server, put it in another and boot it (assuming the MBR is set up, but at the very least you car read it). You can't do that with cheap RAID cards.
