SM is supposed to be able to connect to remote IMAP servers out of the 
box.  Though I generally run an imap proxy on the web server and have 
the proxy do the actual connection to the IMAP server.

SM needs cookies to run.  The error you're getting sounds like the 
cookie is not being set.  Maybe  your browser is not allowing the cookie?
