php4-ldap module does not work

I compiled a new php4 (4.3.10-9) installation from source. I replaced 
the php4 package from the debian archives. After that everything works 
except the pages that do LDAP stuff. The LDAP module does not work in 
that way that I can not even connect to the server. ldap_connect returns 
false.

Does anyone know of certain prerequisites ? libldap2 and libldap2-dev 
were installed.
