I would refer you to SCSI low-level drivers in the kernel config or
IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices.
Here is what the 2.4.20 Linux Kernel config says about 3ware:

[not sure why consiering this is for ATA drives].
x 3ware is the only hardware ATA-Raid product in Linux to date.
x This card is 2,4, or 8 channel master mode support only.
x SCSI support required!!!
