I would just add content negotiation for your pages, so you will have 
index.en.html index.it.html index.es.html .....
According the setting of their own browser the user would get the right 
content ! 
I would not changhe the icons, howewer ....
(but it is trivial, just in each localized page chamghe the hrefs ....)
