Hmmm. Which one is the 642M? How does it compare to 642ME which I could
set up without problems.

642ME:

 - 'standard': just set up a dhcp client on the interface where the
zyxel is connected. If the interfaces comes up and gets an IP address,
point the browser to <IP-address that is mentioned in zyxel's manual>
and follow the instructions.
 - 'advanced': switch the modem into 'modem' mode (using the web
configurator, or the serial cable - the zyxel manual is usable, I
found). Then set up pppoe (the Debian package has good instructions, you
should have received all information from your internet provider).
