Cocoon2 and Tomcat4

Hi,
 
since 1 week, I am trying to get coocoon2 running on my woody machine....
 
On the machine there is one apache installed and I would like to get to know cocoon2.
When installing the package cocoon2 with apt, everything seems to be installed correctly, but it is not working at all.
 
Do you know how to get it running `??
Right know I am stuck to get tomcat4 server to startup properly "The JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined"...
Do I need the server at all??
