Look in exim.conf for a block similar to this  

system_aliases:  
  driver = aliasfile 
  file_transport = address_file
  pipe_transport = address_pipe
  file = /etc/aliases
  search_type = lsearch
  user = list 

and add the last line "user = list" or perhaps "user = mailman" and 
see if that helps.

Otherwise read the exim documentation.  The FAQ on 
www.exim.org can be very useful.
