You could use rsync -e ssh.

I think amanda also can handle encrypted sessions. And it's done to manage an 
automated multi-server backup.

Anyway, you can encapsulate any session into an ssh tunnel (see man ssh, -L 
and -R options) - so you can keep your habits.
