If there are several companies underneith /home you should try
an apache module that was written by Ralf S. Engelshall. I can't
remember it's name - mod_replace, mod_regex or mod_rewrite...

It allowes you to rewrite any URL based on several rules like regex
and I think even on scripts. Then you could do a script that searches
with "find" for the directory and gives that dir back as substitution
variable for ~user.
If mod_rewrite isn't the right one, look for mod_perl or most simple
if mod_alias/mod_userdir does support a kind of external mapping file
for userdirs.
