Re: DHCP on linux

The DHCP client needs to create raw packets on an unconfigured interface,
so it needs the propper kernel hooks. I am not very familiar with the
default Debian kernel (I always have numerous changes to make), but what
you need to do is recompile the kernel with the options you described. I
don't think config filter is required (I don't have it and dhcp is working
fine).

On a side note, the dhcp-sv package that only works on 2.1 and 2.2 kernels
but not 2.0 kernels properly handles rerequesting the existing IP address
(and respects the NAKS if it doesn't get it, one of the packages would
just keep rerequesting, and then fail, I don't remember which one), but
the dhcpc package that combines both doesn't. It apears the dhcpc-sv
package is no longer availible. I will look into it further and see if I
can find the exact problem.
