Thanks for the workaround Ian. BTW, ldd is definitely the culprit: replacing /usr/bin/ldd with the one provided with glibc
2.4 resulted in working initrd images, both with mkinitramfs AND mkinitrd.yaird. I don't know what's wrong though.
