I converted HJ's patch to work on Debian's binutils, you can see it at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=256481
The binutils maintainer seems amenable to applying it, but is currently
moving house and is therefore off-net for a week or more.
