need help to install

I need to purchase a 64bit machine to run some intensive
astronomical data processing. The machine will run Linux, Debian if at all
possible. Since the capability to run x86 applications would be a big
plus, I am considering an ia64. What is the current status of the
Debian port? Is it feasible/reasonable to install Debian from scratch on
an ia64? Can I expect to be able to install and run gcc, g77, some flavour
of (X)Emacs and X on it? I need to be able to compile and run
astronomical data processing software (AIPS, to be specific) on it.

Any information would be appreciated, thanks
Giacomo
